The Magnificent Seven

April 2, 2010

The “Magnificent Seven” is a movie released in 1960, directed by John Sturges and based on the “Seven Samurai,” a  Japanese movie directed by Akira Kurosawa.  The movie became the standard by which most action movies during the 1960’s would be compared.

This is the ultimate “guy movie.”  In the United States, movie are often categorized as “a chic movie” or “a guy movie.”    “Chic movies” are movies that appeal mostly to women while “guy movies”  generally appeal  to men.  The reasons this is such a great guy movie are

  • The story
  • Cast
  • Music
  • Cinematography and location

The story is simple yet very interesting.  A small village in Mexico is visited by a group of local bandits that steal most of the food produced by the village farmers.  The farmers, frustrated by being victimized by the bandits, decide to fight back.  Three villagers cross the U.S. Mexican border and recruit seven American gun fighters to help rid the village of the thieves.  The American return with the three villagers and start to help free the village from the grip of the bandits.

The cast includes some of the most macho (a term referring to strong powerful men) movie stars of the 1960’s into the 1980’s.  The following is a list of the most important stars.  Clicking their names will take to a Wikipedia link about that star.

The music for this movie, composed by Elmer_Bernstein, is one of the most compelling and inspiring music scores for any movie.  The main theme song became the them song for Marlboro cigarettes during the 1960’s.  This is, in my opinion, one of the greatest movie scores of all time.

The cinematography and locations of this movie are very beautiful.  When watching this movie, watch the locations and background scenery  where this movie.  The background mountains and vistas are very beautiful and just add to the overall mood and feel of this movie.  The locations almost become like another character in this movie.

I recommend this movie to anyone who wants to experience a great American western movie.  Western is a term used to describe movies that take place in the western part of the United States the 1800’s.
