On Call

To be on call means after you leave your work, you’re can called you back to work at anytime.  Used in the service industry, where people must be available at any time.

To be “on call” also means you are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  This is especially used for anyone working in a hospital.  They can go home and relax, but they call be called at anytime and expected to come back to work.  Sometimes this is referred to as “24/7.”
